Acceleration Rattle

by TyCurtOrm » October 17th, 2015

Had a new issue pop up recently that I was wondering if anyone could help me diagnose. When I accelerate I get a sort of sputtering/rattling noise coming from the front of the car. It's only when i'm gaining speed. When I hit my cruising speed it goes away. It also doesn't make the noise when revving in neutral. I was thinking it might be a bad spark plug or misfire of some sort but i'm not entirely sure?

Anyone else had this problem before?

I thought that at first but why would it only make the noise at certain RPMs? And It definitely sounds like it is coming from the engine bay. I'm having it looked at today so i'll know what it is here in a little while

I had that acceleration rattle too.

It turned out being my camshaft assembly

3rd cylinder misfire.

also got my timing belt , and water pump replaced as well. i'd have it checked by honda specialist...not the dealer unless you want to go broke

Assuming you have an i4, check the bolt that holds the OEM downpipe bracket to the engine block. I used to have this rattle and fixed it after many months of trying to pin point the rattle.

Thanks guys. I still haven't been able to pin point it. Another weird thing is that it goes away after 50+ miles on the freeway but then the next time I start the car it's back. I'll check out the downpipe to see if that fixes it, if not I guess i'll try and find a good Honda guy. I already took it to one mechanic friend and he suggested a few things but none of them fixed it and since it isn't throwing a code he couldn't figure out specifically what it was.

If it sounds like this:

Then it is the bracket that holds the OEM downpipe to the engine block.

hmm it sounds a little different than that but i'm going to give it a try anyways. Anyway you could tell me the exact part you are talking about so I can find and exploded view of it? Maybe i'll see if I can get a sound recording of the noise as well

It almost sounds like a wobbling or rubbing noise but I really don't think thats what it is because it only makes the noise a certain rpm's and goes away once the car is fully warmed up. It also doesn't make the noise while revving in neutral

Part #10 in this exploded view was missing on my car causing the rattle on acceleration when the engine was cold:
