My Acura RL BBK Build

by korrupt3dazn » October 30th, 2014

After doing a little research and talking to some engineers at work. I came to the conclusion that I wanted to
have steel caliper brackets for my RL Calipers instead of the 6061-T6 Aluminum brackets.
So went on Amazon and purchased a bar of 4140 Steel.

Dropped the bar off with a buddy at the machine shop to cut, drill and tap it for me.

Here is the finish product. From the one bar he was able to produce 5 brackets.

Test fitted the bracket and it was a perfect fit.

Next on the hit list was the rotors. Alot of people say to use the 350z Track edition Brembo rotors. They are 12.8" in diameter.
The problem that I found was that the rotors were to thick. They are about 30mm thick to be exact which is a problem because it causes a clearance issue.
To solve that you would have to shave the calipers. I opted to use Nissan Maxima rotors. They are only 12.6" in diameter but are only 28mm.
This was a perfect fit.

As you can see there is plenty of clearance.

Decided to change the color on them:

This looks great! I'm jealous of your adapters too haha. I can't wait to get mine painted and on!

Long's brackets are awesome! I prefer them over my old Fastbrakes ones. Here is a good reference for anyone who wants to rebuild these:

What is the difference in stopping power? I've got aftermarket pads and rotors and I've gotta say it did make a large difference over stock. How much more of a difference would you say there is in swapping callipers to the RL's and then putting new rotors on? Worth it?

I think that would be a bit hard to measure accurately. One of the main reasons for going with a 4 piston caliper is that it is more resistant to brake fade.

Well I've been contemplating the upgrade. Only reason why I'm hesitating is I'm not entirely sure if I'd notice that much of a difference. I drive my car pretty hard and I am yet to experience brake fade, even after taking it on a 6 hour drive with some buddies on some aggressive backroads. My brakes bite very hard, but could they bite that much harder?

I drove a 2014 Mustang GT about 2 months ago and it had 4 piston Brembo brakes on it stock, and I will put money down that my car has a shorter stopping distance. The power was there but when I pushed the other pedal, it was quite disappointing.

Were there any significant cost savings by buying the steel bar and having it manufactured vs the buying aluminum brackets? Nice job they look great,

It was cheaper for me since my buddy did it for me. Unless you have a machinist. The only place i know of to order these brackets is from FastBrakes.
